First Impression, High on Life

Juiced Up On Life!

If you are a hardcore Rick and Morty fan and you have been waiting for a game that is similar to the show…Then my friend I’m happy to say that the wait is over!

I’ve been roughly into High On Life about 4 hours now and just within a minute, I have laughed about 4 to 5 times already due to the comical relief that your Gun named ‘Kenny’ brings to the game. With its weird moral sense to its out of nowhere rage mode, The gun itself represents the meaning of the game. It has some very well-designed areas from its uptown glamorous lights to its damped slums filled with toxic sludge,

The voice actor for ‘Kenny’ without a doubt is the talented ‘Justin Roiland’ who voiced our beloved characters ‘Rick Sanchez’ and ‘Morty Smith’. Everything in this game is alive, Just as the title mentioned. From the Weapons you pick up to the loot box you smash, Everything is alive and the enemies themselves have nonsensical conversations/arguments when you are about to go into combat.

World’s Interface and Controls

If you want to get the vibe of your early days of watching cartoons, The menu does that with its cartoonish theme of opening up and showing you the various things that are available. But I haven’t gotten to the point of having any mods yet, but I can’t wait to see what will be available for Kenny.

Traversing around various world feels quite nostalgic as though you are in the Rick and Morty Universe besides some controls being not the same as any FPS where the “B” button instead of the usual crouch it has been given the ability to dash, which you have to purchase from the store.

Exploring an area could be tough especially if you don’t have a clue on where to go. But the game has a sensor guiding system which could be access via a simple tap on the D-Pad, which will show you your main objective and the route you need to go to.

Meeting Kenny and Knifey

At the start of your journey, you will be given a choice to select how you want to be seen in the world at the same time your character won’t be able to talk that’s why the weapons are there as a sort of voice to the voiceless.

After a series of incident’s pass by, you will meet your trusty companion on your journey ‘Kenny’ the gun as he guides you through the story with his antics and explaining how to use him in the combat as well telling you his origin story.

Now I was wondering about where the melee was due to the fact that almost every FPS I played as a melee in some sort of a way and I wasn’t able to find it, that’s when after some time pass by you will meet Knifey your ever psychopathic killing companion, who only has one thing on his mind and that is to stab anything and everything.

Engrossing NPC’S

When you begin the game after a small misdirection from the game, you will encounter your first NPC which will be your sister Lizzie. She doesn’t seem much of an interesting character besides the fact that she follows you around after a major incident (not going to spoil you), She behaves like a typical sister.

I was kind of worried after seeing lizzie being so bland that the other NPC’S were going to be same, but to my surprise you meet the one and only legendary bounty hunter (according to Kenny) Gene the alien.

You will find Gene laying around a bench like a hobo till you show up with an interesting offer, which then you will be able to get do his old profession which he counter offers for a catch which is pretty devious and not one you expect from such a legendary character which includes him being a very lazy bum

My Conclusion

In this short time, I’ve played the game, so far, it has been pretty good. With its comedy and over the top comical combat system, it has kept me quite entertain as I search for various weapons with their own personalities and special abilities. But mostly I want them for their personalities just to see what makes them tick.

The issue’s I have with the game so far are that sometimes it feels a bit clunky and the frames stutters for a while, not really sure why it’s doing that on a console, but a simple patch might be able to fix these minor annoyances. Although it occurs from time to time between traversing and boss fights (Mostly), It makes up for its witty and comedic reliefs and it’s not a major crashing bug.

High On Life is now available on Xbox Game Pass please feel free to give this game a try especially if you are a fan of Rick and Morty and love random conversations between the random NPC’S you encounter.
